Improving communities in large cities is a complex process that often requires expert knowledge. As such, professional groups remain the principal stakeholders and ordinary citizens have little say in matters relating to property, land use and construction of infrastructure systems within their city. Our two speakers will talk about their experience in engaging and benefiting local people incommunity improvement.
Carl Maida is a professor of public health at the UCLA School of Dentistry and a member of the faculty at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. His expertise includes community-based research on natural hazards, community toxics, environmental disease, and urban populations.
Robin Cannon is the co-founder and president of Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles (CCSCLA), a grassroots organization, founded in 1985 to oppose the building of a municipal waste incinerator in her community, as well as, to address other environmental, social, and economic problems impacting the South Central community.

Come watch teams made up of students, faculty & staff from Public Policy, Urban Planning and Social Welfare compete in a classic trivia showdown (buzzers and all!). $5 (students) and $10 (everyone else) at the door gets you entry to the event and pizza. This donation will go directly to departmental end of year celebrations!
Confirmed faculty and staff participants: Laura Abrams, Gerry Lavina and Michelle Talley (representing Social Welfare); Sarah Reber, Mark Peterson and Maciek Kolodziejczak (representing Public Policy); and Brian Taylor, Robin Liggett and Robin McCallum (representing Urban Planning)... student team members will be announced next week.
Our professors may know how to solve traffic congestion, develop better juvenile corrections programs or analyze the effect of various education policies, but do they know who designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, who was President during the war of 1812, or name all of the partners on Mad Men?
