Application Checklist

For Entry in Fall 2013

A convenient new feature of the Urban Planning application  enables you to complete your application for the program and upload most of the other supplemental required materials directly onto the site.  Please go to the UCLA Graduate Division Online Application for more information on the process and to apply. 

Deadlines:

  • For Ph.D. admissions and Master's Fellowship consideration: December 15, 2012
  • For Master's admissions, no Fellowship consideration: January 15, 2013

 

1. Apply to the Graduate Division online (www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp).

UCLA Application for Graduate Admission 2013-14.
Complete the Graduate Division application, which consists of the application form and supporting documents. Go to the Graduate Division application website at www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp, and click “Register On Our Site”. Follow the instructions. You do not have to complete it all at one time. You can save the application and submit it when you have all the necessary information. Once you start the application you will be assigned a password for retrieval and verification. 

Please be sure to use the correct major code on your application to the Graduate Division:

  • Urban Planning PhD: 0911 for PhD
  • Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning: 0916 for MURP

Current UCLA Urban Planning Master's students who are applying to the Ph.D. program, and current UCLA Architecture or Latin American Studies master's students who are applying to join the concurrent degree program, should not submit the Graduate Division application.

$80 Application Fee ($100 for international applicants).
You can pay the application fee by credit card online. Your application will not be processed until payment is received.

2. Complete the Supplemental Urban Planning Application.

Now available as part of the UCLA Application for Graduate Admission.

Jr/Sr GPA Worksheet
Complete the Worksheet for Calculating Jr/Sr GPA (Grade Point Average). This will lead to a link on our former web-site.  Please click on it to access the Excel spreadsheet.  (See SAMPLE ). UPLOAD TO THE UCLA GRADUATE ONLINE APPLICATION in the "Supporting Documents Upload" area.

Statement of Purpose
The statement of purpose should be no longer than three double-spaced pages. It should include a concise description of past and present education and employment experiences and how these experiences have led to the choice of urban planning as a career objective, as well as the reasons for seeking admittance to UCLA's Urban Planning program. COPY/PASTE INTO THE TEXT BOX, OR UPLOAD TO THE "SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS UPLOAD" AREA AND INDICATE IN THE SOP TEXT BOX WHICH DOCUMENT # IT IS.

Note: Applicants to the Ph.D. program are required to submit TWO statements of purpose—the second statement should describe the applicant’s intended area of concentration, specific areas of interest in planning, including research interests, and current plans for the dissertation. Ph.D. applicants should also include the names of UCLA faculty with whom they would like to work.

Current Resume
Relevant planning-related experience is highly recommended. There is no page limit. UPLOAD TO THE UCLA GRADUATE ONLINE APPLICATION.

Three Letters of Recommendation
Letters should be from individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic, scholarly, or professional work. At least one of the references should be academic. LETTERS ARE NOW SUBMITTED ONLINE BY THE RECOMMENDOR ON THE UCLA GRADUATE ONLINE APPLICATION.

Transcripts
Unofficial transcripts from each college or university attended in the U.S. or abroad should be UPLOADED TO THE UCLA GRADUATE ONLINE APPLICATION. One official transcript from your bachelors degree-granting institution is required to be sent through regular mail.

Official GRE Scores
GRE scores (from the last five years) are required for all applicants. Be sure to indicate the correct GRE institution (R4837) and department (4402) codes on your GRE registration materials. Joint-degree applicants to the Law or Business schools may submit the LSAT or GMAT (respectively) in lieu of the GRE.

Work Sample (Optional for Master's applicants; required for Ph.D. applicants)
Preferably research papers and/or a copy of the master’s thesis are required of doctoral applicants. Work samples such as reports, research papers, etc., are optional for applicants to the master's program. No more than two samples should be submitted, and work in a language other than English will not be considered. Samples should be uploaded to the Supporting Documents on the online application. Do not send CDs.

TOEFL Scores (For international applicants only)
The minimum score required is 600 paper-based/250 computer-based/100 internet-based. The TOEFL institution code for UCLA is 4837 and the department code is 97. If you have completed or are enrolled in a minimum two-year degree program in an English-speaking country, the TOEFL is not required.
