All visa procedures are handled by the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars. Please note that international applicants do not need to submit a Confidential Financial Statement with their application. International applicants whose first language is not English must certify their proficiency in English when applying to UCLA, and, if admitted, upon arrival. Unfortunately UCLA has only a limited number of fellowships and assistantships for which non-U.S. graduate students are eligible. These are awarded to students who have demonstrated high academic achievement in their studies on this campus. International students at UCLA are not eligible for support based solely on need.   Therefore, international students are strongly advised to secure funds from their own sources.

The Department of Urban Planning provides merit-based funding only to the top applicants.   Because UCLA is a state-funded university with very limited fellowship funds, it is rarely possible for us to provide international students with full funding.   If your application is ranked among the top of our applicants, we may award you partial funding.   Unfortunately if you are not able to find the balance of your funds from other sources, it is unlikely that you would be issued with a visa.   (There are sometimes some research assistant positions available, but the faculty are not able to guarantee these positions in advance and they are not normally allocated until students arrive here.)

Currently, living expenses for the Academic Year of 2011-2012 at UCLA are:

• MURP - US$33,025 for tuition and fees for three quarters;
• PhD - US$29,720 for tuition and fees for three quarters;
• US$20,226 for basic living costs (food, rent, laundry, local transportation, books and supplies, etc.)

Therefore, you need to prove that you will have at least US$53,251 at your disposal for the first year MURP ($49,946 for PhD).   If you plan to bring your family, you should expect to add the following costs: US$4,500 for your spouse, plus US$2,000 for each child.   Health insurance is mandatory and is included in the above figure for tuition and fees. Please note that these figures are subject to change without notice.

Prospective international graduate students should explore every available source of funding.   Check with your undergraduate institution as your first step.   The following list provides an overview of possible sources of funds:

Enables graduate students, young professionals and artists from abroad to conduct research and study in the United States. Some scholarships are renewed after the initial year of study.
