Expectations
This unique opportunity to shadow, during one business day, a senior manager or nonprofit leader in a career field or specialization of interest can be important to students who want the benefit of a practitioner's expertise. The Senior Fellows who participate also benefit from interactions with students. Successful "day on the job visits" are usually those in which the student assumes the responsibility for making the most of the visit. Here are some general expectations.
- Discuss Fellow’s general career path and your possible career path.
- Why did the Fellow choose that particular profession? What are one or two of the toughest/most important/most influential policy decisions he/she had to make?
- Share what you have learned/are learning in class.
- Make the connection between what you are learning in class and what you want to do.
- Ask the Fellow about his/her academic program. What was important to learn?
- Share networks through meeting colleagues or attending recommended conferences.
- Get to know the Fellow’s background. Learn about his or her organization prior to your site visit.
- Be prepared to address the questions, “What do you want to get out of this experience? What are your expectations?”
- Ask for the Fellow’s contact information and offer yours. If you are interested in a continue relationship, share this with the Fellow. We have encouraged the Fellows to consider accepting any mentor-mentee relationships that are a natural outgrowth of this experience.
- Do remember that the Fellow didn’t come to this program prepared to hire you, but ask about internships, discuss career goals and strategies, talk about developmental opportunities and share what you are looking for to see where it leads.
