To All Students:

All students enrolled in the MSW program at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs are required to obtain and carry student liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $2,000,000/$4,000,000.00 The reason that this malpractice insurance requirement is necessary is because the students in our program are not covered by the general liability policy at the UC. If anything were to happen, faculty would be covered by the University, but not the students. The liability is too great to continue without insurance, and many other schools have required it for some time. Students may use any carrier they choose, provided they meet the minimum coverage.

You must have proof of coverage on file by August 1st to begin Field Placement.
 

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BEGIN FIELD PLACEMENT IF PROOF OF COVERAGE IS NOT PROVIDED TO US

The department does not endorse any insurance providers. However, we do know that the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) student members are able to obtain coverage for about $48.00 per year as a member benefit. Information regarding obtaining coverage through NASW is listed below. Note: You will have to pay to become a member and also pay for the malpractice insurance if you choose this option.

To Obtain Coverage From NASW:

Students can now register as a member and pay for malpractice insurance all in 15 minutes without having to mail-in an application. After paying for a NASW membership, go to americanprofessional.com and malpractice insurance can be purchased there and within one business day, the proof of insurance will be e-mailed. Please note:

• First, you must become a student member which you can apple for only at the following address: http://www.naswdc.org
• If you prefer to complete the application by mail, make sure to send a copy of both the application and the check.In case the process takes longer than expected, it is important that you have proof that you applied or you will not be able to start your field placement.

Whichever carrier you choose is you to you as long as you have the required limits of liability. After you received your insurance packet from the insurance company, please forward only the page of the policy which states the effect date, expiration date, and limits of liability. This may be a "Declarations Page" or a "Certificate of Insurance." If in doubt, contact Regina Thomas at (310) 825-2258
