A Senior Fellow Policy Briefing

The foster care system is burdened with the almost impossible task of mitigating the worst effects of societal dysfunction: child abuse and neglect. Should media shine a light on a foster care system practically and legally cloaked in obscurity? The UCLA Luskin Senior Fellows program will host a forum to explore the ethical standards that journalists should adhere to in exchange for access to these sensitive hearings. This will elicit a deeper conversation about what the role of journalists covering child welfare writ large should be.

The prevailing question is whether or not it is possible to stimulate increased trust between professionals in fields of social work, law and journalism, allowing them to better work towards the best interests of children.
