Michael Dukakis – the former Massachusetts governor, onetime Democratic presidential nominee and, for the past 17 years, a visiting professor of public policy at UCLA Luskin – was the subject of an op-ed interview by Los Angeles Times columnist Patt Morrison.

Between sharing his opinion on the economic turmoil in Europe, the Citizens United Supreme Court case and the electoral college, Dukakis offered advice to those who would seek public office.

The bright spotlight that comes with a national campaign shouldn't be discouraged, Dukakis said, since effective leaders should be prepared to deal with public scrutiny. "If you can't set high standards of integrity for yourself and the people who work for you, you don't deserve to be in the business," he said.

Dukakis also said that an informed electorate is a benefit, but real progress requires thoughtful analysis and evaluation of competing policies. "I think a lot of Americans are better informed, yet there's more required than just having information," he said. "It's trying to make judgments about where we want this country to go."
