Urban Planning Professor and Luskin School of Public Affairs Associate Dean Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris was interviewed on KCET Departures, an an online documentary series mapping Los Angeles neighborhoods through interactive portraits.

Loukaitou-Sideris, an expert on public space and author of Sidewalks: Conflict and Negotiation over Public Space (MIT Press, 2009) comments that:

"My culture shock...was that I could not find people on the sidewalks; the sidewalks were empty! Being raised in Athens, I was surrounded all the time by people walking on the streets. I mean, even nine, ten, eleven, twelve o'clock at night, people are walking in the streets of Athens. This vibrant sidewalk life is very much part of the culture of southern Europe."

The Departures team has spoken with hundreds of people (residents, historians, migrants, to name just a few) to create multilayered portraits of the neighborhoods and people that compose this city.
