David Sloane speaks on “Emotion Along the Roadside: Mourning and Commemoration in Creating a Healthier Community”

David Sloane is a professor and director of undergraduate programs in the School of Policy, Planning, and Development at the University of Southern California.Dr. Sloane has written two books and numerous articles in the areas of urban/planning history and community planning around safety and health. He is currently working with the Community Health Councils’ African American Building a Legacy of Health community collaborative project, funded by CDC and RWJ, aimed at reducing health disparities around diabetes and cardiovascular disease in South Los Angeles and collaborating with a social psychologist on a National Institute for Justice funded study examining gang youths’ social identities.Professor Sloane served previously as a director of the Vernacular Architectural Forum, and is currently a member of the board of the Los Angeles Regional Planning History Group, an associate editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association, and secretary of the board of directors of the Community Health Councils, Inc. He is the co-moderator of the work group on medicine and public health in the Huntington-USC Institute for the Study of California and the West.
