Over the last half century, Detroit has transformed from an industrial and innovative powerhouse into a dysfunctional metropolis where the automobile industry has been failing and the population has been declining. Prof. George Galster will present his findings on how and why Detroit has transformed, applying economics, sociology, political science, geography, history, and psychology. He will discuss how Detroit’s automotive economic base and housing development system have greatly frustrated the population’s search for basic physical, social, and psychological resources. Speaker BioGeorge Galster is the Clarence Hilberry Professor of Urban Affairs at Wayne State University. His research has focused on urban neighborhoods and housing markets, exploring how they change and how they change the people who live within them. His latest book is Driving Detroit: The Quest for Respect in the Motor City (2012).  Prof. Galster earned his Ph.D. in Economics from M.I.T.Lunch will be provided. RSVP now!
