Gender Inequality and Empowerment Frameworks: The Sonagachi Project

Jan 17 @ 12:00 pm-1:30 pm

Professor Dallas Swendeman, professor at the UCLA School of Public Health, will discuss the Sonagachi Project and the role of social workers and other professionals in this project.  He will address gender inequality, empowerment frameworks and sustainability in international projects. The Sonagachi Project, based in Calcutta, India, has been associated with lower HIV rates among sex workers as compared to other urban centres in India. The program defined HIV as an occupational health problem and included multifaceted, multilevel interventions addressing community (having a high-status advocate; addressing environmental barriers and resources), group (changing social relationships), and individual factors (improving skills and competencies related to HIV prevention and treatment). http://www.plri.org/resource/sonagachi-project-sustainable-community-intervention-programPlease RSVP to Sherry Dodge at dodge@publicaffairs.ucla.edu.
