Prevention of Suicide: Challenges and Opportunities for Social Work Research and Practice

Apr 8 @ 1:00 pm-2:00 pm

Suicide is a serious public health problem around the world. In the United States, suicide claims more than 38,000 lives each year (an average of 105 each day). Nearly one million adults reported making a suicide attempt in the past year. Suicide results in an estimated $34.6 billion in combined medical and work loss costs. Although suicide is the tenth leading cause of death for all ages and the third leading cause among those aged 15-24, it still remains an enigmatic phenomenon.Social Welfare professor Mark Kaplan will discuss the current state of suicide research and prevention with two leading national experts: Jerry Reed, Ph.D., M.S.W., Vice President and Director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence and Suicide; and Lisa Brenner, Ph.D., Director of the VA VISN 19 Mental Illness, Research Education and Clinical Center and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado.
