SUMMARY:We Gon' Be Alright
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the digital adaptation of “We Gon’ Be Alright\,” Jeff Chang’s critically acclaimed collection of essays on racial resegregation\, followed by a dialogue with the author and filmmakers. The docuseries produced for PBS’ Indie Lens Storycast examines how a nation that has historically embraced diversity has allowed itself to resegregate along racial and economic class lines — and how Americans can come together in ways that offer hope beyond the divide. \n \nThe evening’s panelists: \nJeff Chang\, author and advocate for racial equity. Chang is vice president for narrative\, arts and culture at the nonprofit Race Forward and co-founder of CultureStr/ke and ColorLines.\nHe has been a USA Ford Fellow in Literature and the winner of the Asian American Literary Award. \nKimmie Kim\, producer and showrunner of the “We Gon’ Be Alright” docuseries. Kim has produced numerous documentaries on subjects including the 40th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live\,” singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran and comedian Rick Crom. \nBao Nguyen\, producer and director of the “We Gon’ Be Alright” docuseries. The filmmaker’s past work has been seen on HBO\, NBC\, Vice\, ARTE\, PBS and the New York Times\, as well as in international festivals and museums. \n  \nThe Luskin School of Public Affairs at UCLA acknowledges the Gabrielino/tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and Southern Channel Islands).  As a land grant institution\, we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors)\, ‘Aniihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past\, present\, and emerging.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversation: "Public Los Angeles" Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Coffee & Conversation: “Public Los Angeles” Book Talk\n“Public Los Angeles” is a collection of essays presenting insights into 20th century LA\n\n\n\nPublic Los Angeles is a collection of unpublished essays by scholar Don Parson\, accompanied by a collection of nine essays by friends and mentors\, focusing on little-known characters and histories located in the first half of 20th century Los Angeles. An infamously private city in the eyes of outside observers\, LA has often been celebrated or caricatured as the epitome of an American society bent on individualism\, entrepreneurialism\, and market ingenuity. But Parson presents a different vision for the vast Southern California metropolis\, one that is deftly illustrated by stories of sustained struggles for social and economic justice led by activists\, social workers\, architects\, housing officials\, and a courageous judge. \nPublic Los Angeles presents insights into LA’s historic collectivism\, networks of solidarity\, and government policy\, helping shape our understanding of public housing\, gender and housework\, judicial activism\, and race and class in modern-day Los Angeles. Please join us for a conversation with the book’s co-editor\, Judy Branfman\, a filmmaker and researcher at the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment\, along with Elizabeth Blaney and Leonardo Vilchis\, co-founders of Union de Vecinos\, to discuss the region’s complex social and cultural history\, Parson’s legacy\, and visions for the future of Los Angeles. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:HEC Series | Promise and Peril: Homeownership in Southern California
DESCRIPTION:Join us Feb. 26 for a Housing\, Equity\, and Community series conversation about the past\, present\, and future of homeownership in Southern California\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA UCLA joint endeavor sponsored by the UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies and the UCLA Ziman Center’s UCLA Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Program in Real Estate\, Finance and Urban Economics \nHomeownership is still viewed as a pillar of the American Dream\, but that dream is out of reach for many Southern California residents. Median home values now exceed $600\,000 in LA County\, with only 46% of households owning their homes\, including just 39% of Hispanic or Latino households\, 32% of Black households\, and 18% of households headed by someone age 35 or under. \nThe housing market is plagued by high prices\, heaps of student debt holding back potential buyers\, discriminatory lending practices\, and the legacy of racial covenants and redlining\, yet homeownership remains one of the surest routes to wealth and financial stability — at least for some. Among those who can afford it\, the path to ownership can depend on the exploitation of renters with Ellis Act evictions\, tenancies-in-common (TICs)\, and owner move-ins. Can homeownership be saved for future generations? If so\, what will it look like in the future? If not\, what does it mean for our region\, including those whose retirement is built on housing equity? \nJoin us Feb. 26 for a Housing\, Equity\, and Community series conversation about the past\, present\, and future of homeownership in Southern California. \nSpeakers: \n\nAshraf Ibrahim\, Office Director\, Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA)\nRocio Sanchez-Moyano\, Doctoral Candidate\, UC Berkeley Department of City and Regional Planning\nDorian Young\, Mortgage Counselor\, NACA\n\nModerator: \n\nMichael Lens\, Associate Faculty Director\, UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies; Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy\, UCLA Luskin School

SUMMARY:InterActions LA 2020
DESCRIPTION:note: this event will be online-only as a result of concerns related to the COVID-19 outbreak \nInterActions 2020: Uplifting Women’s Safety in Transportation\nThis year’s event will discuss the opportunities to improve safety for women\, girls\, and other vulnerable populations as they travel throughout the Los Angeles region. Too often\, people in these groups feel unsafe in public and this inhibits their freedom\, independence and quality of life. Fear shouldn’t be the status quo for anyone. LA Metro’s recent “Understanding How Women Travel” report highlighted a litany of problems but what are the solutions? How can solutions benefit everyone? \nWe will explore the most pressing problems and opportunities in crime prevention through environmental design\, bystander programs\, and the possibility of other non-policing strategies. Safety improvements should buoy all people and not introduce fear for others with concerns around racial profiling or other biases. \nThis spring\, InterActionsLA will pair results from recent academic work on public transit safety from LA and around the world with real-world examples and thoughts for advancing safety for everyone. Participants will have an opportunity to exchange their best ideas with each other and engage deeply on solutions to advance mobility justice for women\, girls\, and everyone. \n
