SUMMARY:Senior Fellows Working in Transportation
DESCRIPTION:Established in 1997\, the Senior Fellows program pairs prominent community\, government\, and business leaders in the public service arena with UCLA Luskin School graduate students in a mentorship role. We are excited to welcome two Fellows working in transportation to discuss the transportation equity\, as well as their professional pathways\, roles\, and any insights and advice to current students. \nThis conversation is co-sponsored by the UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies and will be moderated by Madeline Brozen\, Deputy Director of the Lewis Center. Brozen is an expert on active transportation issues in urban design. In her work on transit planning\, Brozen has studied how to design transit systems to enhance women’s preferences and needs. Brozen previously served as a program manager of Complete Streets Initiative\, and collaborates with colleagues in the Fielding School of Public Health on open streets research. She previously served on the board of directors for the Associate of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals and is vice chair of the LA Metro Westside Service Council. \nSenior Fellows: \n\nHilary Norton is the Executive Director of FASTLinkDTLA (a Transportation Management Organization). Her work at FastLink is focused on improving mobility and infrastructure investments for people of all abilities\, and is a partner on the Festival Trail — a 22 mile active transportation plan to link up numerous venues and ensure that they are universally accessible. Norton holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College and a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University’s School of Government. She also previously served as a California Transportation Commissioner for two terms\, appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.\n\n\nEli Lipmen joined the Move LA staff in August 2017 after working on the successful Measure M campaign and was appointed Executive Director in 2022\, having previously served on the Leadership Board for over six years. Eli has dedicated his life’s work to social change\, from hunger to human rights to climate change to affordable housing. He was honored by the TransitCenter for organizing national advocacy to achieve a more equitable Bipartisan Infrastructure Law\, the largest national investment in the public transportation system ever. Eli is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania\, the USC Annenberg School for Communications\, the London School of Economics & Political Science\, and the Coro Lead SoCal Fellowship program.

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice and Community Organizing with the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN)
DESCRIPTION:“Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) is an environmental justice organization with deep roots in California’s Asian immigrant and refugee communities. Since 1993\, we’ve built a membership base of Laotian refugees in Richmond and Chinese immigrants in Oakland. Together\, we’ve fought and won campaigns to make our communities healthier\, just places where people can thrive. Learn more about APEN’s work and join us on February 2nd for a workshop with Luskin UCLA.”  \nSeng So\, Los Angeles Lead Organizer: “In the 1980s Seng So’s parents fled the Khmer genocide and settled in the Bay Area. It is from this history—the struggles and sacrifices of his ancestors—that paves his path today. Seng has been a youth organizer in California’s immigrant and refugee communities for almost two decades. At the heart of his life and work are three principles: community\, love\, liberation.” \nAPEN is launching our new organizing project in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County: cities and neighborhoods like Wilmington\, San Pedro\, Carson and Torrance.
