Program Overview

The Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) prepares MSW students to serve as school social workers in California public schools. School social workers serve as the link between home, school, and community, giving primary emphasis to helping public school pupils achieve academic success through advising, intervention, and family engagement.

  • School Social Work Pathway: Prepares MSW graduates for credentialed school social work practice in California public schools.

  • Home-School-Community Link: Trains practitioners to serve as the connection between students, families, schools, and community resources.

  • Academic Success Focus: Emphasizes the role of academic advising and behavioral support in helping students achieve school success.

  • CCTC Approved Program: A California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved program offered through the Department of Social Welfare.

Degree Requirement

The Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) pathway prepares MSW students for professional practice as school social workers. In addition to completing all required MSW coursework, students must complete specialized coursework in school social work, education law, child psychopathology, and advanced practice, as well as a qualifying school-based practicum. Students pursuing the PPSC must complete the required practicum hours and credential requirements established by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
