The “medical freedom” movement, once a cornerstone of political campaigns in Florida and other states, has been largely eclipsed this election cycle by voter concerns over issues such as inflation, foreign policy, and the effects of the AI boom.
But in some places, the movement — known for questioning the efficacy of vaccines and banning masks in schools and fluoride in water — has evolved into a subtly unified libertarian bloc with a shared contempt for the medical industry, Politico reports.
On the national level, the “medical freedom” movement has not substantially changed conventional treatments, says UCLA Luskin Professor of Public Policy Mark Peterson. But he said it has exposed a lack of communication between doctors and patients about the pros and cons of vaccines.
“It’s about trying to have more two-way communications and having respect for everyone,” Peterson said. “Vaccines have been among the most profound interventions in the history of humanity. It’s just hard to run counter to that.”
