The UCLA Voting Rights Project (VRP), joined by Senior Advisor Xavier Becerra, has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) and a naturalized California voter, challenging the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to use federal databases to identify and potentially remove alleged noncitizens from California’s voter rolls. The lawsuit argues that inaccurate, outdated and inconsistent government records could mistakenly flag eligible naturalized citizens, while creating fear and confusion among immigrant communities. The plaintiffs are asking the court to block the federal government’s voter-list matching efforts and prevent further actions that they argue exceed federal authority and violate constitutional and federal protections.
