Speaker Series Presentations
3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Ananya Roy, Professor of Urban Planning, Social Welfare, and Geography, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) | Director, UCLA Institute on Inequality and Democracy | Los Angeles, CA
State Capitol, Room TBA

We think of people in a public shelter as getting a handout, but what about ourselves? Everyone is getting benefits from government activities – education, transportation, health care – but why do we only see others as public beneficiaries. Ananya Roy provides a mind-expanding definition of a handout.

Ananya Roy is Professor of Urban Planning, Social Welfare, and Geography and the Meyer and Renee Luskin Chair in Inequality and Democracy at UCLA. She is inaugural Director of the Institute on Inequality and Democracy at UCLA, which promotes research and scholarship concerned with displacement and dispossession in Los Angeles and seeks to build power to make social change. Ananya’s research and scholarship has a determined focus on poverty and inequality. She currently leads the Housing Justice in Unequal Cities Network, a National Science Foundation Research Coordination Network and the Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar, Sanctuary Spaces: Rethinking Humanism. Her most recent book is Encountering Poverty: Thinking and Acting in an Unequal World (University of California Press).

Speaker Series Presentations will be livestreamed, here.
