In what country is this true? Every 32 seconds a child is born into poverty. Every 4 minutes a child is arrested for a drug offense. Every 22 minutes a baby dies before his or her first birthday. The answer, believe it or not, is the United States. It doesn’t have to be this way. Born during the Civil Rights Movement, the Children’s Defense Fund has fought for all children, challenging our country to raise its standards by improving policies and programs that affect young lives. Leading the crusade has been Marian Wright Edelman, the first Black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar and the founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund. In this special conversation, Mrs. Edelman will share stories of her struggles, achievements, and the ongoing imperative to build a prosperous future for all of our children. A reception precedes the program.
