The Luskin School of Public Affairs in partnership with Volunteers of America present  American Winter:Millions of Americans Still Left Out in the Cold  Documentary Screening and Panel   5:00 PM Reception 6:00 PM Screening and Panel Faculty Center, California Room  480 Charles E Young Dr N, Los Angeles, CA 90095   The documentary film American Winter is about middle class families falling into poverty and their search for help. The film has proven to be a tool in helping to shift dialogue and perceptions about poverty, as it challenges stereotypes about who turns to the social safety net for help and why.   The film also breaks down destructive myths and stereotypes that portray those who need social services as “takers”; and lazy people who don’t deserve help. It showcases the fine lines between stability and poverty; between employment and unemployment; between being housed and homeless. Following the screening, director Joe Gantz, housing advocate Orlando Ward, and Social Welfare professor Laura Abrams will lead a discussion among social service leaders, community members and Luskin scholars about how to close the holes in the safety net and bring millions of Americans in from the cold.
