STEVE LOPEZ IS AN AWARD WINNING JOURNALIST WHO WAS NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED INthe film The Soloist, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as Lopez. The film adaptation was based on Lopez’s book, The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music, and documents Lopez’s series of columns about his unlikely friendship with a schizophrenic bassist, Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, and Ayers’ slow transition out of homelessness. He is the author of 3 novels and a book of non-fiction. More recently, Lopez has covered the Occupy L.A. movement, and has a passion for gerontology, education, and the underserved.COLUMNIST STEVE LOPEZ JOINED THE STAFF OF THE LOS ANGELES TIMES IN MAY 2001after four years at Time Inc., where he wrote for Time, Sports Illustrated, Life and Entertainment Weekly. Prior to Time Inc., Lopez was a columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer, the San Jose Mercury News and the Oakland Tribune. His work has won numerous national journalism awards for column writing and magazine reporting.
